With the vision of empowering the next generation towards a sustainable future, the Sustainable Development Council joined hands with Sri Sangharaja Central College of Maradana to successfully celebrate World Environment Day 2026.
Highlighting the importance of celebrating World Environment Day, a series of initiatives were carried out yesterday, including promoting students’ attitudes and skills towards environmental responsibility, a parents’ Sharamadana programme to clean the school environment, strengthening the school’s waste management system, reactivating the school home gardening project, implementing a tree planting programme, initiating the first phase of establishing a school Environmental Pioneer Unit, and donating books on the environment and its conservation to the school library.
Under the guidance of the Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Cultural and Sports of the Western Province, a landmark programme was launched at this historic school, recognized as the first Central College in the Western Province. The Principal, dedicated teaching staff, and enthusiastic students actively participated alongside officials of the Sustainable Development Council, marking a significant step towards advancing sustainability and environmental awareness in schools.
