A discussion to review progress on SDG 4: Quality Education was held today at the auditorium of the Ministry of Education, under the patronage of the Secretary to the Ministry, Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewa.
A presentation on the progress of the education sector in relation to the SDGs and their indicators was delivered by the Director General of the Sustainable Development Council, Chamindry Saparamadu. The progress was reviewed in detail with regard to SDG 4.2 Early Childhood Development, SDG 4.5 Equal Access to Education, SDG 4.a Education Facilities, SDG indicator 4.b.1 Official Development Assistance for Scholarships and SDG indicator 4.c.1 Organized Teacher Training.
Attention was drawn to the need to establish a formal institutional mechanism for collecting and reporting accurate data related to the SDGs and preparation of strategic plans based on accurate data values. There was a broader discussion on the consideration of SDG data during the Education Policy Reform process.
Staff officers representing the Sustainable Development Council, along with officials from the Ministry of Education’s Planning, Education for All, Higher Education, Vocational Education, and Statistics divisions, participated in the event.
