Collaboration and accurate data are essential to showcase a country’s true progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As Sri Lanka prepares to present its Third Voluntary National Review (VNR) in 2027 at the High-Level Political Forum, accurate and evidence-based reporting has become more important than ever.

In line with this priority, the Sustainable Development Council convened a High-Level Data Validation Workshop to revisit Sri Lanka’s prioritized SDG indicators and ensure that the national progress is accurately captured. The workshop aimed to sensitize SDG data-generating agencies on the importance of addressing existing data gaps, strengthen institutional coordination for accurate data collection and validation and enhance current SDG reporting mechanisms.

More than 75 representatives from data-generating agencies participated in the workshop. The session provided a platform for participants to gain insights into Sri Lanka’s current status in SDG reporting, understand national progress and global standing, familiarize themselves with the data validation process and discuss existing data gaps and reporting challenges.

Discussions highlighted the need for stronger institutional coordination, the use of granular and real-time data and improved data validation processes. Discussions also emphasized that accurate reporting is essential to avoid underreporting achievements and to support evidence-based policymaking.

The session also generated valuable insights to further strengthen the national SDG reporting process. Key suggestions included identifying additional SDG indicators aligned with the mandates of relevant ministries and institutions as well as issuing a circular to make SDG reporting mandatory across all relevant institutions.

Following the successful preliminary workshop, a series of data validation workshops will be conducted with relevant ministries and institutions to address existing data gaps and further enhance the quality of SDG reporting.
