The Data Validation Workshop for the Environment and Water Resources Thematic Group was successfully held yesterday in a hybrid format, bringing together key stakeholders from relevant institutions. The workshop focused on revisiting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators related to the environment, water resources, waste management and forest management.

The primary objective of the session was to review the current status of data availability, identify existing gaps and inconsistencies in SDG reporting and highlight priority areas requiring improvement. Participants also engaged in discussions to explore the inclusion of additional indicators where necessary, with the aim of strengthening the overall SDG monitoring and reporting framework. Special attention was given to enhancing data accuracy, consistency and reporting frequency to ensure that national progress is effectively and reliably captured.

The session was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Central Environmental Authority, Department of Forest Conservation, Survey Department of Sri Lanka, National Building Research Institution and Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government and other relevant institutions involved in environmental and water resource management. The representative of the Department of Census and Statistics also attended as an observer to provide technical assistance in validating the data.
