The Sustainable Development Council (SDC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) convened the 5th Inter-Agency Committee (IAC) Meeting today to discuss the progress in developing the Migration and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Monitoring Platform (MSMP). The Platform aims to serve as a comprehensive digital infrastructure for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting migration-related data, aligned with the SDGs and the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).

The platform is designed to provide government agencies, international organizations, researchers, and policymakers with access to both quantitative and qualitative data across eight modules: Migration Insights, Economic Contributions, Education and Skill Development, Health & Well-being, Gender and Vulnerability, Infrastructure and Financial Inclusion, Labor Rights and Fair Recruitment, and Monitoring and Policy Integration.

In early 2024, this initiative was introduced to develop a sustainable mechanism to track the progress on achieving the migration-related targets of the 2030 Agenda on SDGs as well as the contribution of migration towards the national development process. It has led to noteworthy strides, most significantly the development of the National Framework to Measure the Progress and Contribution of Migration, which was presented to the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism earlier this year. Countries that actively implement and promote GCM principles are often called GCM champion nations. The planned MSMP platform has strong potential to position Sri Lanka as a GCM champion country by promoting enhanced data-driven decision-making, improving migration governance, and fostering international cooperation on migration-related issues.

The meeting was attended by representatives of relevant government agencies Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment,  Ministry of Education, National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, Department of Immigration & Emigration, Department of Census and Statistics, Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Council and Local Government and was co-chaired by the Director General of SDC, Chamindry Saparamadu and Chief of Mission, IOM Sri Lanka and Maldives, Kristin Parco.
